Colorado Action for Healthy Kids

Welcome to the Colorado Team

Action for Healthy Kids is the nation’s leading non-profit and largest volunteer network fighting childhood obesity and undernourishment by partnering with schools to improve nutrition and physical activity to help our kids learn to eat right, be active every day, and be ready to learn.

The Colorado Action for Healthy Kids Team’s focus is on community engagement as we begin the 2009-2010 school year. During the fall, we will attend the Jefferson County PTA Conference to promote our nationally-known Parents are the Power! resource for empowering parents as agents of change in Colorado’s schools.  Then we’ll kick off the ReCharge! Energizing After-School excitement in the Adams 14 School District. Don’t miss our quarterly meeting where we’ll launch our 2009-2010 strategic plan!  The Colorado Team is leading the way in creating a vibrant state-wide movement of families, teachers, administrators, and community members in support of healthy schools and kids.

  • The Colorado Team worked with 8 districts and engaged more than 1000 students!
  • In Pueblo, we held bilingual school wellness workshops that engaged parents as advocates.
  • The Colorado Team is taking our new school wellness presentation to parent organizations across the state.

Looking Ahead

Our goals are to:

  • Educate parents on healthy living and how to make changes in their children’s schools that impact health.
  • Partner with school administrators to make health a priority to improve academic success.
  • Recruit community members as change agents for health in their school communities.

Our Favorite Resources

  • Parents are the Power! A toolkit that assists parent teams to create healthy changes in their school within the areas of nutrition and physical activity/education.  Also available in Spanish.
  • Breakfast = Achievement How to make breakfast happen in your schools
  • Recess before Lunch A tip sheet on play time before lunch time
  • Helping Youth Make Better Food Choices: Tips for Parents and Caregivers  Tips for parents and caregivers with suggestions to help youth make better food choices in a colorful format that can be used as a handout or poster.  Available in English and Spanish.
  • Helping Youth Make Better Food Choices: Tips for Schools  Tips for schools with suggestions to help youth make better food choices in a colorful format that can be used as a handout or poster
  • Healthy Classroom Parties - Many times foods served in the classroom, in the case of a class party, are low in nutrients and high in calories. To send the right message, administrators, teachers, parents and students need to promote healthy lifestyle principles, replacing unhealthy food offerings with healthy ones at school parties.
  • Healthy School Fundraising - New school fundraising strategies, which include the sale of healthy foods and non-food items, are a public demonstration of the school's commitment to promoting healthy behaviors among students, families, and the communities at large, while helping schools meet their financial needs.
  • Using Non-Food Rewards - At school, home, and throughout the community, kids are offered food as a reward for "good" behavior.  Often these foods have little or no nutritional value, but are easy, inexpensive and can bring about short-term behavior change.  Learn about other items that help promote health, and reinforce lessons kids are learning about healthy eating and living an active lifestyle.
