Kentucky Action for Healthy Kids
Welcome to the Kentucky Team Kentucky Action for Healthy Kids is a state team to Action for Healthy Kids, the nation’s leading nonprofit and largest volunteer network fighting childhood obesity and undernourishment by helping schools become healthier places so that kids learn to eat right and be active every day. Our mission is to enhance the nutrition and physical activity opportunities in Kentucky’s schools in order to promote student health and learning. How do you transform legislation that is on the books in the state capital into real change that impacts the health of children? How do you make wellness policies come alive at the building level through programs and practices? How can you encourage schools to take a hard look at their strengths and weakness without generating conflict between school administrators and parents? Although Kentucky Action for Healthy Kids has not found the answer to all of these difficult issues, we’re taking action to change the culture within the state through our strong regional teams, a vibrant network of partnerships, and effective action plans that respond to the needs of Kentucky’s communities. Our goals are to:
Get Involved There are many opportunities to get involved with Action for Healthy Kids in Kentucky--from becoming a team member, to attending Action for Healthy Kids’ events, to making a financial contribution--you can help create a safer environment for our kids! If you feel compelled to lend your voice to one of most important issues of our time, and would like to take that first step towards creating a healthier environment for our kids, join the Action for Healthy Kids community by taking the Every Kid Healthy Pledge on the left-hand side of the page. Grant/Resource Opportunity Announcement An opportunity for $500 mini-grants to Kentucky high school organizations is available to improve the school environment and policies in the areas of physical activity, nutrition, school gardens or tobacco prevention through Students Taking Charge (STC). The Kentucky STC Mini-grant Application provides the background information, mini-grant expectations and the grant application with scoring criteria. Please note that the grant application is due on February 25, 2013 or sooner. There will be a total of 32 mini-grants dispersed geographically across the state available for high school student organizations/clubs (through their school) to receive a mini-grant in one of three focus areas: 15 STC physical activity, nutrition or school garden and 17 STC tobacco prevention. This opportunity is possible through the collaborative efforts of Kentucky Action for Healthy Kids, Kentucky Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Program, Kentucky Coordinated School Health Initiative and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.
